Pear production has declined in Virginia over the past century, with a combined assault by fire blight and pear psylla. There are about 165 acres of pears in the state (2012 USDA data). Most production in the mid-Atlantic region is now in Pennsylvania, with scattered orchards in other states. There are a few new plantings of Asian pears to complement the predominant European varieties of Pyrus communis. |
