Spotted pelidnota, Pelidnota punctata (Linnaeus)
This is taken primarily from an
extension bulletin by D. G. Pfeiffer & P. B. Schultz, entitled
"Major Insect and
Mite Pests of Grape in Virginia" (Va. Coop. Ext. Serv. 444-567 (1986))
This beetle feeds on grape foliage and fruits
but is not an important
problem in maintained vineyards. The adult is a tan beetle with black
spots, 2-2.5 cm long. Larvae feed in decaying stumps and logs, so
grapes attacked by the adults are often near wooded areas.
